Shiva became angry at the child whom he didn't recognize, refusing him entrance to his own home. Shiva challenged Ganesh to a fight and cut off the head of his son. The head rolled away. Parvati found Ganesh's headless body and asked Shiva to bring back her son. Since they couldn't locate the head, Shiva cut the head off young elephant and put it on Ganesh's body. He also made a promise that Ganesh would always be worshipped first before any other gods.
